Walking tour
Timeless Sagunto
More than 2200 years ago Hannibal set off with his elephants from Sagunto to conquer Rome. Today, Sagunto is a small town with beautiful evidence of its Roman history. It has remnants of the Via Augusta, a castle, and a Roman theatre that’s still in use today.
Together with Secret Valencia we’ve put together a fun tour that gives you a bit of everything…
The route
We start at the Via Augusta archaeological Museum; here you can see what the street looked like 2000 years ago. From here we take a scenic walk up to the castle (pace is flexible), which offers phenomenal views over sea and valleys. On the way up, we pass through the old Jewish quarter, a maze of narrow streets that once housed a thriving Jewish community. Here, you can truly feel Sagunto’s ancient history, shaped by Jews, Romans, and Moors.

From the castle, we descend towards the theatre, where you can test the Roman acoustics. We wrap up the tour with a delicious lunch near the theatre.
The climb to the castle requires a reasonable level of fitness, and good (walking) shoes are recommended.
The tour is led by excellent guides who bring Sagunto’s history and culture to life in an engaging way. The pace is relaxed, with personal attention and plenty of time for questions, photos, and short breaks.

Practical
The tour lasts about 5 hours; entrance fees and lunch are included, so you can enjoy this special day without a worry. And don’t forget: bring good shoes – it truly is an experience where you’ll be walking straight into history!
